A man was driving down the road when his car broke down near a monastery. He walked to the gate, knocked on the door, and asked if he could stay the night.
The monks welcomed him warmly, fed him a simple meal, and even repaired his car.
That night, as he tried to fall asleep, he heard a very strange sound. The next morning, he asked about it, but the monks replied that they could not tell him because he was not a monk. He felt disappointed but thanked them anyway and left.
Years later, the same thing happened. The monks again fixed his car. That night, he heard the same sound and said, “ I’m dying to know what that is!”
The monks told him he must travel the earth and count every blade of grass and every sand pebble. So he set about his task.
Fifty-four years later, he returned and knocked on the door again with the answers. The monks smiled and said, “ Congratulations. You are now a monk.”
The head monk led him to a wooden door. He turned the knob but found it locked. He asked for the key.
Behind it stood doors of stone, ruby, sapphire, emerald, silver, topaz, and amethyst. Each time he demanded the key. At last, he felt relieved that he had reached the end.
He unlocked the final door, turned the knob, and discovered the source of the mysterious sound.
But he can’t tell you because you’re not a monk.
